    It’s easy to laugh of course, isn’t it? As if the world was going to end on 21st May 2011 just because some religious lunatic said so. What alarmed me then and alarms me now is the lengths to which the truly devout would go in response. After all if you’ve subcontracted your morality out to religion, why stay moral when you believe you’re guaranteed to rise up with Jesus? Check this out:


    Harold Camping should be held liable for this (and any other instances which arise). Martin Pribble couldn’t be more right when he says:

    I agree with what Voltaire is famous for saying “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it”but with one addition: “and in return you must be willing to face the consequences of your actions.”

    And that’s exactly it. Hopefully the plethora of Christianists in America will start seeing just how much they’ve been duped, but I wouldn’t like to put my money on it. People who feel detached from the mainstream of things will always latch onto whatever it takes to feel part of something, even delusional bullshit like this ‘rapture’.

    Britain abandoned Section 28, but the legislature in the American state of Tennessee has now passed a similar piece of anti-gay nonsense, which would prohibit teachers in elementary and middle schools from talking about homosexuality at all. It blows my mind that anyone ever thought that the discussion of same-sex attraction could make someone gay, but it shocks me even more that an American state should try to enshrine such moronic prejudice into law now.

    Out gay former Star Trek actor George Takei has something to say about this development. Love George, who didn’t even remark on the irony of the bill being sponsored by Sen. Stacey Campfield. Americans, eh?

    His hatred of the Tories is self-evident (and quite right). Cameron says he believes a free media is a building block of a free society? He has a funny way of showing it indeed. But Mitchell’s hatred of Labour is equally valid – for them to attack the BBC for cowardice when the Hutton witchhunt was entirely their doing is unbelievably hypocritical. The two of them together have reduced BBC News to a supine gathering of cowards and sycophants, uncritically presenting what each government has told them is fact, without any meaningful critical evaluation. I would say the biggest problem is their refusal to stand up to both parties – if they end up diminished, under-funded or wholly trampled over by Murdoch, much of it will be their own fault.

    I’ve always liked David Mitchell on TV and have loved his writing for some time, but since ’10 O’Clock Live’ he’s really come into his own. In all honesty his Listen to Mitchell segment is now so beautifully written and delivered that he’s sort of making Jon Stewart look a little amateurish on ‘The Daily Show’…
